We’re excited to share learning from New Pathways for Arts Development, a new program that engages 15 of New York’s arts development agencies.
About New Pathways for Arts Development
We’re excited to announce EmcArts’s New Pathways for Arts Development, a recently established program in New York City that launched this past fall. Funded by the New York Community Trust and the Booth Ferris Foundation, this series of workshops, participant-led convenings, and coaching sessions engages teams from 15 of New York’s arts development agencies.
New Pathways for Arts Development aims to engage with the adaptive challenges of organizations in New York that do not primarily produce or present art, but rather provide services in support of the ongoing development of an arts discipline, its organizations and practitioners, or of a particular area of arts activities.
This program creates and advances a learning network for the City’s arts development agencies around collaboration, innovation, and adaptive change; supports their leaders with the confidence and skills to think and act differently in designing their organizations’ futures; and leaves them with a greater capacity to consistently innovate and adapt.
The 15 New York City organizations participating in New Pathways for Arts Development are:
- Asian American Arts Alliance
- American Indian Artists Inc. (AMERINDA)
- Brooklyn Arts Council
- Council of Literary Magazines and Presses (CLMP)
- CUE Art Foundation
- Dance/NYC
- Fourth Arts Block (FAB)
- Harlem Arts Alliance (HAA)
- Lower East Side Printshop
- National Guild for Community Arts Education
- Northern Manhattan Arts Alliance (NoMAA)
- New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA)
- Queens Council on the Arts
- Staten Island Arts
- Third World Newsreel (TWN)
Sharing learning from New Pathways
Here on ArtsFwd, we will highlight the work of these creative leaders, demonstrate how their work exemplifies different aspects of innovation, and encourage others in the arts service sector to get on board with the adaptive change thinking of these New Pathways participants.
I’m pleased to share guest posts from participants Tyler S. Bugg of Fourth Arts Block and Peter Cobb of New York Foundation for the Arts, each of whom will be contributing their perspectives on their respective organization’s work during New Pathways for Arts Development.
To learn about what each of their organizations took away from the first two workshops, we asked the bloggers to reflect on three questions:
- What are the complex challenges your organization has identified during the first two workshops?
- What underlying assumptions has your organization identified and what evidence are you identifying that is causing you to question those assumptions?
- How has your identification of those assumptions and challenges already impacted your work? What conversations or behavior indicate those changes?

- NYFA: A New Approach to Technology and Professional Development, by Peter Cobb
We will check in with Tyler and Peter after the New Pathways workshop series has concluded to learn more about how their exploration of these complex challenges have impacted their organizations, and what small experiments they are undertaking at Fourth Arts Block and NYFA. Stay tuned for future updates!
